Pune To Parli Vaijnath Jyotirlinga Cab

Parli Vaijnath is also known as Parli Vaidyanath. This temple is said to have been built during the time of the Yadavas of Devagiri by their chieftain Srikaranadhipa Hemadri. Punyashlok Rani Ahilyabai Holkar restored this temple.

This temple is cherebandi and is magnificent. The long steps and the grand entrance are the places of interest in the temple premises. As the gabhara of the temple and the assembly hall are on the same level, the Jyotirlinga can be seen from the assembly hall. Nowhere else, but only at Vaidyanath, one can touch God and have darshan. There are three big tanks in the temple premises. About three kilometers from the temple is the Someshwar temple at Jirewadi, at a height of 300 feet on the banks of Brahmanadi.

Once Ravana went to the Himalayas to do penance to please Mahadev. Mahadev is pleased with Ravana’s penance and asks him to beg. Then Ravana begs for Lord Mahadev to stay in Lanka in the form of great power and linga. Mahadev bestows divine power on Ravana to fulfill his wish and gives a linga to Ravana to establish in Lanka. But Mahadev tells Ravana, “I will live forever wherever this linga rests on the earth before taking it to Lanka.” Ravana accepted Mahadev’s words. But as the Shivlinga was very heavy, he could not bear its weight. Then Mahadeva split the linga into two forms and asked them to carry the linga through Kavadi. Ravana had to urinate in the road while he was carrying the kavad. Ravana wondered how to urinate with the Shivlinga on his shoulder, then he saw a hawk passing by. Ravana told the cow to stand for a while without touching the ground. But as Gavala could not bear the weight of the kavadi, he lowered the kavadi to the ground and the linga was established there.
