Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga

Bhimashankar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India. Bhimashankar is in Khed taluka of Pune district. The Bhima River, one of the major rivers of Western Maharashtra originates from this Jyotirlinga. But, she goes into hiding from there and is believed to reappear in the forest about 1.5 km east of the temple. Bhimashankar is located in the main range of Sahyadri and is surrounded by dense forest. In 1984, this forest was declared as a sanctuary. This place has become a major tourist destination in Pune district due to its dense forests and pilgrimage sites. This temple of Hemadpanti style is around 1200 to 1400 years ago.

Beautiful carvings are found on the roof of the temple, on the pillars. The carved idols of Dasavatara on the temple are linear and beautiful. Outside the auditorium is an iron bell weighing about five manas. Chimaji Appa is said to have gifted this bell. This hour is marked 1729 in English. Due to the renovation and new construction of this temple, which is constructed in the Hemadpanti style, the original temple cannot be seen.

The tradition of worshiping Bhima Shankar by Marathi rulers has been going on since Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. On entering the temple there is an idol of Lord Ganesha on the left side and on the right side there is an idol of God’s protector “Shri Kalbhairav”. After entering the core, the holy Shiv Linga is seated. There is a vertical hole in the Shivlinga. It has two parts, Shiva on one side and Shakti on the other. 1) Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary has been protected for the conservation of the very rare Ratufa indica. The Shekru is the state animal of Maharashtra and is also known as the Flying Khar or Bhimkhar. Animals like tiger, leopard, wild boar, golden wolf, jackal, antelope, anteater, taras, monkey, sambar, sheep, deer, mouse deer, rat etc. are found in this sanctuary. 2) Bhima Nadi

Bhima river is also religiously important and is also called Mahanadi (big river). Matsya, Brahma, Vaman etc. The directions of this river come from Puranas and Mahabharata. After killing Tripurasura, Shankar came to Bhimashankar to avoid labor, there a king named Bhimaka of Ayodhya was doing penance. He faced Shankara. At that time, Shankara was pleased and asked Bhimka to marry him. 3) Nagphani Point

There is a footpath from the Ashram to Nagphani. This place is the highest place in the sanctuary and its height is 1230 meters above the sea level. There is a very panoramic view of Konkan and its surroundings. From Konkan, this peak looks like a serpent’s claw, hence the name Hagfani.

4) Shivneri Fort

It’s just 67 km. from Bhimashankar. Shivneri, the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is located in Junnar taluka of Pune district. This fort was very difficult to climb from all sides and difficult to conquer. There is a small temple of Shivai Devi on Shivneri Fort. Before the birth of Shivaji Maharaj, Jijabai had vowed to this Shivai Devi. Images of Jijabai and Bal Shivaji have also been installed on the fort.
