Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is the smallest Jyotirlinga temple. The temple complex has a five-tiered spire and several pillars, built in the form of intricate mythological carvings. The red stone walls built within the temple premises mainly depict the ten incarnations of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. A beautiful story is also told about this temple. Ghrishna and Sudeha were two sisters and Sakhya was also Savati. That means both were married to the same man. But both of them had no children. Ghrishna was a great devotee of Shiva and worshiped Lord Shiva regularly. As a result, she had a son, but Sudhe, burning with jealousy, killed the child and threw it into the river. Ghrishna was in Shiva Puja when the incident took place, but even after hearing that the child had been killed, she was neither disturbed nor did she leave the Puja halfway through. She only said that he who has given me a son will protect him. Shankar was pleased to see her devotion and Ghrishna’s son came out of the river revived. But he told his mother to forgive Sudhe. When Shankara was pleased with Ghrishna’s devotion, she prayed to Shankara to dwell in this place forever in the form of Jyoti, and Shankara too heard her prayer. This place got its name Ghrishneshwar after the name of Ghrishna.
